Learn to say no in ten minutes

Most opportunities are not for you, and recognising that quickly is a skill. Time saved on obvious noes is time available for the few ideas that deserve weeks.

Research time is the scarcest resource an investor has. Most ideas that cross the desk are not going to be owned, and the discipline that matters is recognising that quickly - so that the few genuine candidates get the weeks of attention they deserve.

The quick disqualifiers

A business you genuinely do not understand. A management record that raises governance questions. A balance sheet dependent on continuous refinancing. An industry with no durable economics regardless of who operates in it. None of these require a full model to reject; each is sufficient on its own.

A fast no is not a lazy no

Saying no in ten minutes is only legitimate when it rests on a clear, stated reason - not on unfamiliarity or a glance at the price. The test is whether you could explain the rejection to someone who liked the idea. If not, it deserves more time, not less.

The point of the filter

The purpose is not to reject things; it is to protect the depth of work on what survives. An investor who studies fifty businesses shallowly knows less than one who rejected forty-five quickly and truly understood five.
