Temperament matters more than intelligence

Investing does not reward the cleverest person in the room. It rewards the one who can stay rational when the price says otherwise - and that is a different quality entirely.

Analytical ability is the entry ticket to investing, not the edge. Plenty of very intelligent people do poorly in markets, and the reason is almost never that they could not read a balance sheet. It is that intelligence does not protect you from acting badly when the price is moving against you and everyone around you is anxious.

The decisions that cost most are emotional

Selling a good business in a panic, buying an expensive one out of envy, holding a broken thesis out of pride, abandoning a discipline after one bad year - none of these are analytical failures. They are temperament failures, and they usually happen at the moments that matter most.

Temperament can be built

It is not purely innate. Deep research builds the conviction that makes patience possible. Sensible position sizing makes a decline survivable. Writing down the thesis in advance gives you something to check against when the mood turns. Preparation is how a calm temperament is manufactured rather than merely hoped for.

The quiet advantage

In a market where information is cheap and widely shared, the durable edge is behavioural: the willingness to be patient when others are not, to be independent when the crowd is loud, and to do nothing when nothing is the right thing to do.
