Position sizing - let conviction decide the weight
A portfolio is not just what you own; it is how much of each. Sizing positions by genuine conviction, rather than by comfort or by tip, is where a lot of the real return is quietly made or lost.
A portfolio is defined not only by what it owns but by how much of each thing it owns. Two investors can hold the same names and get very different results purely from how they sized them. Position sizing is where a great deal of the real return is quietly made or lost, and it should be driven by one thing: genuine conviction, built from research.
Weight follows understanding
The positions you understand best and believe in most should carry the most weight. That sounds obvious and is often violated - by sizing to comfort, to a tip, or to how a name has recently performed. Disciplined sizing means the biggest holdings are the ones with the deepest research and the clearest thesis behind them, not the ones that happen to feel exciting this month.
Concentration and its limits
Conviction argues for concentration; humility argues for limits. The strongest ideas deserve real weight, but no single view is certain enough to bet everything on, and a business can always surprise you. Sensible sizing lives between those two truths - concentrated enough that good decisions matter, diversified enough that a single error is survivable.
Sizing is a decision you revisit
A position's right size is not fixed forever. As a thesis strengthens, a holding may earn more weight; as facts change or a price runs far ahead of value, it may deserve less. Reviewing sizing as facts change - not reacting to price, but responding to the business - is part of the same discipline that governs whether to hold at all.
